Brad is currently working on gene patents and a history of intellectual property and biological property.

Kathryn Adams is an Agricultural Scientist and a lawyer, having held senior positions in a wide range of organisations. She was the first Registrar of Plant Breeder's Rights in Australia, has practiced as a solicitor and an agricultural microbiogist, and has held senior positions in R&D management and investment areas, including Executive Director of the Energy R&D Corporation, Executive Director of the Forest and Wood Products R&D Corporation, Director of the Queensland Horticulture Institute and Executive Director with the Queensland Environmental Protection Agency. She is on a number of Boards, a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and is involved in Alternative Dispute Resolution. She has particular interest in the links between public policy, law and agricultural industry development.

Matthew Rimmer is an Associate Director of ACIPA and a Senior Lecturer in Law at the Australian National University. He holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honours and a University Medal in literature, and a Bachelor of Laws with Honours from the Australian National University. Rimmer received a Doctorate of Philosophy from the School of Law at The University of New South Wales for his thesis: "The Pirate Bazaar: The Social Life of Copyright Law". He has published widely on copyright in journals in Australia, Europe, and the United States.

Matthew has published in patent law, access to genetic resources and plant breeder's rights. His work has been featured in Australasian Science, the Bio-Science Law Review, the European Intellectual Property Review, and the Journal of Law and Medicine.

As part of our goal of raising awareness about intellectual property in the rural sector, the public information provides an overview of the fundamentals of intellectual property law and also addresses specific intellectual property issues relevant to the agricultural community. Jay is currently completing a PhD in plant intellectual property.

Antony Taubman

Antony Taubman is a Senior Lecturer at ACIPA. He is internationally renowned for his policy work in the field of intellectual property. Prior to coming to ACIPA, Tony was Director of the WTO Intellectual Property Section at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Senior Advisor (Strategic Planning and Policy Development) to the Director General, and Senior Program Officer (Asia-Pacific Region), in the World Intellectual Property Organisation. He has also conducted training and teaching on IP issues and practice in many Asian countries and has published a number of articles on Asian intellectual property law. In 2002 Tony was asked to head the new Global Issues division of the World Intellectual Property Organisation, where he is on secondment until 2005.

Leanne Wiseman is Associate Director of ACIPA and an Associate Professor in Law at Griffith University. Prior to joining Griffith University, she was a Senior Lecturer in Law at QUT and worked in private practice and Government as a solicitor. Leanne's primary research interests lie in the field of intellectual property law and her publications are in the fields of intellectual property, contract and company law. She has served as an executive member of the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand (IPSANZ) for a number of years and currently remains a member of the Intellectual Property Committee of the Law Council of Australia. Leanne is also involved with the Arts Law Centre of Queensland.

Mark’s teaching and research interests are the Torts, the History of Common Law English and Legal Profession, and the relationship between private law and human rights.

Justin Malbon returned to academia from employment in legal practice and government. He is admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor, was a Partner in a small Adelaide law firm, and appeared regularly as legal counsel in the Supreme and District courts. After obtaining an LLM in Canada he taught at the Law School, University of Melbourne. He then practiced in a large commercial law firm in Melbourne before taking a senior public sector position in Queensland. He headed the Legislation Branch of the Division of Aboriginal and Islander Affairs, advising the government on the Mabo case. He then drafted legislation for three years before returning to academia. Justin's PhD was on the constitutional recognition of indigenous rights.

Kimberlee Weatherall is a Senior Lecturer in the TC Beirne School of Law at The University of Queensland, and an Adjunct Research Fellow with the Australian Centre for Intellectual Property in Agriculture. Her research interests span intellectual property. She has a particular interest in three broad areas: enforcement of intellectual property rights, the effects of bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs) on IP law, and issues concerning surrounding the intersection between copyright law and technology.  She is currently working on the role of ‘outsiders’ (competitors, NGOs, and others) in the IP system, particularly in challenging and defining particular IP rights.  Kim joins The University of Queensland after 3 years as Associate Director (Law) of the Intellectual Property Research Institute of Australia at The University of Melbourne.  She has previous worked at The University of Sydney, and holds degrees from Oxford University and Yale University, specialising in intellectual property and property theory.
