Competition in the Agricultural Seeds Sector: GMOs, IP and competition at a cross roads?

6 May 2015, CGIAR Master Class, Charles Lawson

This master class considered the recent United States litigation affecting the innovation markets for GMOs and the role of intellectual property in limiting the various GMO markets. The recent end of Monsanto's Roundup Ready gene patents was discussed as this provided a good illustration and the vexed issue of how to make sure materials are open access after the patent exhausts (or the contract ends), and the kinds of agreements that need to be in place to make sure the materials are available (such as regulatory approvals, and the like) consistent with the CG Centers' IA Principles.
