ABS Governance: The Biodiversity, Agriculture, Health and
22 July 2015, CGIAR Master Class, Charles Lawson
Regulating access and benefit sharing (ABS) genetic resources is evolving along a number of fronts. This master class overviewed the various ABS governance arrangements and contrasts the different approaches to illustrate some of the emerging issues and how they have been addressed. The matrix of ABS regulation reveals unresolved tensions in the unfinished business of global economic development and the sites of developing global ABS norms. In particular, the master class compared the approaches under the Plant Treaty material transfer contracts for some agriculturally important plants with similar arrangements under the International Health Regulations for sharing influenza viruses.
